  1. U.S. in spiritual decline, says poll (7/94)

  8.        Three out of four Americans are worried that the United States is 
  9. in moral and spiritual decline, according to a poll taken by Newsweek.
  10.        Those questioned said that crime, drugs, family breakups and low 
  11. moral and ethical standards were the problems that most concerned 
  12. them. Seventy-two percent said character questions detract from 
  13. President Bill Clinton's ability to exert moral leadership and 58 
  14. percent said they believe he is a fair or poor role model.
  15.        The poll was released just as the U.S. Supreme Court refused to 
  16. let Cobb County, Georgia, display a 3-by-5-foot artwork depicting the 
  17. Ten Commandments and teachings of Jesus.
  18.        "I certainly regret that they refused to hear it," said county 
  19. attorney Dotty Bishop.  County officials had urged justices to allow 
  20. greater accommodation of religion in public life.
  21.        "The judicial branch of our government has been allowed to 
  22. coerce the American people into an amoral straight jacket which has 
  23. begun to tear our society apart at the seams," the county's appeal said.
